Discord asks you to keep the top 48 px fairly simple, so your server's name stays easy to read over it.

No logo or text

Discord's own guidelines say to avoid a banner with a logo or text in it, and suggest subtle background art. A gradient in your server's colours is exactly that.

Who can set it

Servers at Boosting Level 2 can add a banner, and Level 3 can add an animated one. Owners, and members with the Manage Server or Administrator permission, set it in Server Settings, Overview. The studio has no GIF export, so an animated banner needs another tool.

Bigger is fine

Discord resizes a 1920 × 1080 upload for you, which is the size of the free first download here.

Questions

What size is a Discord server banner?
At least 960 × 540 pixels at 16:9, which is Discord's recommended size. A 1920 × 1080 image is resized automatically when you upload it.
Do I need a boosted server?
Yes. Server banners unlock at Boosting Level 2, and animated ones at Level 3. Discord Partner servers get the banner without boosting.
Is it free to download?
Yes. The first download needs no account: 1920 × 1080 at 16:9. A free account exports 5 4K images a month, 3840 × 2160 at this ratio, with no watermark.
Can I use my own colours?
Yes. Every example opens in the studio at 16:9. Change the palette (paste your brand's hex codes), the style, the grain and the blur, then export.
