16:9, as Zoom asks, at least 1280 × 720. The studio's 16:9 frame is the same shape.

  • You

You cover the middle, so the edges are what people see. Put the colour there, keep the centre calm, and leave text out: your own view is mirrored.

Calm behind the head

Busy backgrounds make the background-removal edge around your hair more visible. A soft gradient with its brightest part off to one side hides the edge and lights you from behind.

Darker than you

Pick a background a little darker than your face and you stand out; a pale one makes cameras expose for the background and darkens you.

Works in Meet and Teams too

Google Meet and Microsoft Teams take the same 16:9 image. Upload it under background effects; Teams recommends at least 1920 × 1080 as well.

Questions

What size is a Zoom virtual background?
1920 × 1080 pixels (16:9), at least 1280 × 720. The first download from the studio, no account needed, is exactly 1920 × 1080.
Why does text on my background look backwards?
Zoom mirrors your own preview by default, so text reads reversed to you but correctly to everyone else. A gradient has no text to worry about.
Is it free to download?
Yes. The first download needs no account: 1920 × 1080 at 16:9. A free account exports 5 4K images a month, 3840 × 2160 at this ratio, with no watermark.
Can I use my own colours?
Yes. Every example opens in the studio at 16:9. Change the palette (paste your brand's hex codes), the style, the grain and the blur, then export.
