Email clients don't crop: they scale the whole header down to the phone's width. Text inside the image shrinks with it, so set your title as live text over or under it.

Export big, display at 600

Export at 5:2 and set the image to width 600 in your template. Retina phones and laptops get the extra pixels; everyone else gets a scaled-down image that's just as sharp.

Keep the words out of the image

Many inboxes block images until the reader allows them. A title set as real text over a background colour still reads when the image doesn't load.

Watch the file size

Keep a header under about 200 KB so the email opens fast. The HD export at 5:2 is 1920 × 768; resize it to 1200 × 480 before uploading and it lands close.

Questions

What size should an email header be?
600 pixels wide is the standard email width; 600 × 240 (5:2) is a common header shape. Upload it at 1200 × 480 and display it at 600 so it's sharp on retina screens.
Does it work in Mailchimp, Beehiiv and Substack?
Yes, it's an ordinary JPG. Upload it as the header or as an image block at full width.
Is it free to download?
Yes. The first download needs no account: 1920 × 768 at 5:2. A free account exports 5 4K images a month, 3840 × 1536 at this ratio, with no watermark.
Can I use my own colours?
Yes. Every example opens in the studio at 5:2. Change the palette (paste your brand's hex codes), the style, the grain and the blur, then export.
